I have some news that I've known about for a while but can now share publicly. A dream come true: I’ve got a book deal! This time next year (give or take) I will be a published author! Last week, I signed the contract for my first-ever book deal, giving me the freedom to announce it. I will be published by Penguin Random House Canada, the publisher of many fine titles. The working title of my book is “Prisoner #1056: A Survivor’s Story.” On the surface, it’s an uplifting story.
This book is a conventional memoir that will speak not only to the immigrant experience, but the trials and tribulations of the global Tamil community. It will give voice to a generation of immigrants who are coming of age now in Canada and other Western nations, and tell the untold story of them and/or their parents leaving Sri Lanka and their experiences prior to arriving on friendly shores in order to build a better future. This has to do with inter-generational trauma. But the middle chapters will also tap into the business-book genre.
I wrote this book as an act of gratitude to my father, who I observed intently as a young boy. He instilled in me a love of the English language. By observing and listening to him, I gained knowledge of how humanity functions. Learning English from him helped me put this knowledge into words. I’m also grateful to my wife Sue and son Aaron for never once complaining when I spent many hundreds of hours working on this book. Especially to my wife for always putting up with my craziness and for being endlessly tolerant and supportive. Humanity thrives on hope and optimism. This book strives to be a testament to that — and, dedicated to freedom and democracy. My appreciation for both is boundless.
